Overview

Marangu Route

Marangu is Kilimanjaro's original tourist route, developed with sleeping huts along the way rather than tents — a genuinely different logistical experience from every other route on the mountain. It approaches from the east and uses the same path for both ascent and descent, which some trekkers appreciate for its simplicity and others find repetitive.

Good To Know

FAQs

Should I choose the 5-day or 6-day version?
We strongly recommend 6 days — the 5-day version's compressed acclimatization schedule meaningfully lowers summit success rates.
Do I need to bring a sleeping bag if there are huts?
Yes — huts provide bunks and mattresses, but you'll still need your own sleeping bag.
Is Marangu easier than other routes?
The terrain isn't necessarily easier, but hut accommodation simplifies the daily routine compared to camping.
