Guide

Everything you're wondering before you book

Whether this is your first big trek or you've climbed before, these are the questions that come up most in our initial conversations with climbers.

Do I need climbing experience?

No — Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing skills or equipment like ropes or crampons. It's a long, high-altitude trek, not a technical mountaineering ascent.

How fit do I need to be?

Reasonable fitness helps you enjoy the days more, but pacing and acclimatization matter more to summit success than athletic performance. See our training guide for specific preparation advice.

Which route should I choose?

It depends on your priorities: Machame for proven scenery and popularity, Lemosho for the best acclimatization, Marangu for hut accommodation, Rongai for solitude and dry-season reliability, and Umbwe for the quietest, most direct climb.

Is it safe?

Climbing with a reputable operator using experienced guides, proper acclimatization pacing and emergency protocols makes Kilimanjaro a safe undertaking for the vast majority of climbers.

What's the best time to climb?

June-October and January-March are the two dry-season windows; see our best time to climb guide for details.

What toilets are available on the mountain?

Will I get phone signal on the mountain?
Signal is patchy and unreliable above the lower camps; treat the climb as a genuine digital break.
