Lake Natron is one of the most otherworldly places in Tanzania: a caustic, alkaline lake whose water turns deep red in the dry season, colored by salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in conditions almost nothing else can survive. That inhospitality is exactly why lesser flamingos choose it — predators can't reach their nesting islands, making Natron the only regular breeding site for the species in East Africa.
