Overview

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of Africa's great underrated wildernesses. Its name comes from the Great Ruaha River, the lifeline that draws elephant, buffalo, kudu and large predator populations to its banks in the dry season — often with no other safari vehicle in view for hours at a time.

  • One of the highest lion densities of any African park
  • Significant populations of both greater and lesser kudu
  • A meeting point of Southern and Eastern African wildlife species
  • Consistently low visitor numbers, even in peak season

What to expect

Great Ruaha River

The dry-season lifeline that draws elephant, buffalo and predators to its banks in large numbers.

Big Cats

Exceptional lion densities, plus healthy leopard and cheetah populations.

Kudu Country

One of the few parks where both greater and lesser kudu are regularly seen.

Best Time To Visit

When to go

June to October (dry season) is best — the Great Ruaha River shrinks to a trickle in places, concentrating wildlife along its banks for outstanding game viewing. The wet season is lush and quiet, better suited to birding than big-game density.

Is Ruaha suitable for a first-time safari?
It's better suited to travelers who have safaried before and want a wilder, more remote experience, though it works well for anyone prioritizing few crowds.
How remote is Ruaha really?
Very — most visitors fly in, and camps are widely spaced. This is part of its appeal.
Can I combine Ruaha with the Northern Circuit?
It's a long way from the Serengeti, so most itineraries pair it with Nyerere or Mikumi instead, as part of a dedicated Southern Circuit trip.
