Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains is one of only two places in Tanzania to see wild chimpanzees, and arguably the more remarkable of the two: a mountainous, forested peninsula on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world's second-deepest lake, reachable only by boat or light aircraft. A habituated troop of roughly 60 chimpanzees roams the forest above pristine, sandy lake beaches.

  • One of the largest known wild chimpanzee populations in East Africa
  • A habituated troop makes tracking success rates high
  • Freshwater beaches on Lake Tanganyika for swimming and relaxing between treks
  • No roads — reached only by boat or light aircraft, keeping visitor numbers low

Best Time To Visit

When to go

May to October (dry season) offers the best chimp-trekking conditions, with easier terrain and denser chimp visibility as fruit becomes scarcer in the canopy. The wet season (November-April) is lush but trails become slippery and some camps close.

How difficult is chimpanzee trekking?
Treks vary from an easy 30-minute walk to several hours, depending on where the troop is that day — guides adjust for your fitness level.
How do I get to Mahale?
By light aircraft to Mahale's airstrip, or a scenic boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika — there is no road access.
Can Mahale combine with a classic safari?
Yes, though it requires extra flights — most travelers treat it as a dedicated add-on to a longer Tanzania itinerary, often paired with Katavi.
