You don't need everything on the internet's packing lists. Here's what genuinely matters.
Kilimanjaro packing lists online can run to 80+ items and quietly convince people to buy far more than they need. Here's a simpler way to think about it.
You'll go from rainforest heat to summit-night cold on the same trek. A base layer, insulating mid-layers and a proper waterproof/windproof outer shell matter more than any single "magic" item.
Broken-in hiking boots, a warm sleeping bag rated well below freezing, a headlamp for the summit night push, and good sunglasses/sunscreen for the equatorial UV at altitude. These are worth investing in properly.
Sleeping bags, trekking poles, gaiters and even down jackets are widely and affordably rentable in Moshi — useful if you don't climb cold mountains often and don't want to buy gear for one trip.
Too many changes of base layers (you can rewear these), excessive electronics, and full-size toiletries are the most common weight wasted. Porters carry a weight-limited duffel, so pack deliberately.
Get the layering and the non-negotiables right, rent what you can locally, and don't stress over the rest. See our complete Kilimanjaro Packing List for the full item-by-item checklist.
